In this age of fast living with drive by junk food and drive-while-you-drink filter coffees, it's become more common for employees to, along with their food and drink, also bring their own electronic devices to work.

But how does BYOD (Bring your own device) work in practice and is it a viable option in an academic environment such as the university where confidential information has to be protected at all cost?

WHAT IS BYOD?

Since the beginning of 2011 the abbreviation BYOD became more common within the IT context. The term refers to the policy which allows employees to use their own devices (smart phones, tablets and laptops) at work to access company information and applications.
