The Grit Site is the Intellectual Property of EquipU4 and the Tracking Unit, Stellenbosch Universiy, 2011 What is grit? Grit is defined as “perseverance and passion for long-term goals.”  Individuals high in grit are able to maintain their determination and motivation over long periods of time despite experiences with failure and adversity. Their passion and commitment towards the long- term objective is the overriding factor that provides the stamina required to “stay the course” amid challenges and set-backs.   Essentially, the grittier person is focused on winning the marathon, not the sprint. The Grit Scale: An Introduction   The Grit Scale was designed by Angela Lee Duckworth of the University of Pennsilvania in America and is an eight item self-report questionnaire which measures trait-level perseverance and passion for long-term goals.  Among adults, the Grit Scale was associated with educational attainment and fewer career changes. Among adolescents, the Grit Scale longitudinally predicted Grade Point Average and, inversely, hours watching television. Among cadets at the United States Military Academy, West Point, the Grit Scale  predicted retention. Among Scripps National Spelling Bee competitors, the Grit Scale predicted final round attained, a relationship mediated by lifetime spelling practice. Stellenbosch University has the permission to use this instrument to investigate the relationship between the grit of our students and their academic performance.  We are grateful for your participation!  In return you will get feedback regarding your score and will also get access to multimedia modules that will inspire you to become grittier!  Proposed Action Plan Step 1 Complete the Grit Scale (second option in the top menu), study your score and feedback and encourage your friends to complete it too.
